My business was wholly virtual before being virtual was cool, and it’s likely where you work is already at least partially virtual. That’s why it’s important for us to have this little chat about the unique skills you need to thrive online. Don’t worry. I’m not suggesting you learn HTML or figure out how to use all the apps on your smartphone. But, I am challenging you to turn the volume up on self-awareness and to see what a great difference this tiny creative workout can make in your ability to be fabulous colleague, mentor or boss.
Let the intervention begin. First, stop dismissing the idea you need a strategy and skills for working anywhere immersed in technology. Stop delegating when you should be evolving. What? You intend to retire before it really matters? Well, I have some news for you. This already matters, right now, to every single working person, except for approximately ten people in the workforce who never use email to communicate, never rely on online businesses to order or ship, and never use a search engine to find stuff. If you happen to be one of these ten people, please feel free to ignore this intervention while driving in your pre-1990 automobile—without playing music or radio.
